owner Harry Bonner says, “ We don’t make the best food but we make the best food in town.” Well, they certainly make some of the best candied yams, string beans, collard greens and rolls. Sides are big stars in soul food/southern cuisine. Yes, folks want the fried chicken and the barbecue but the sides are contending every step of the way. At Ms. Marians, it is safe to say every side dish is perfectly seasoned. The potato salad has an especially sweet relish taste. As for the mac & cheese lover, expect a creamy mac & cheese.This is a restaurant with a back story of former Norfolk Neptune semi-pro football Bonner having an alternate identity as the “Barbecue Boss. “ If you have dined at those restaurants then expect the same great flavor at Ms. Marian’s named for his wife.
Now on to the poultry and meat, perfectly golden fried chicken and fish(Whiting) were served to us. Watch out for bones in this type of fish. Both the fried chicken and fish were easy on the spice. For my liking, just a bit more salt or another spice would enhance the flavor. The barbecue pulled pork is quite tasty with a slight zing.
Things you will rarely find on a soul food menu are rolls, smoked chicken and sweet potato jacks but you will find them at Ms. Marian’s. The rolls are delectable.
Monday through Friday, the restaurant offers a $6.99 lunch buffet.
