What happens when two dark souls collide? You get the soul of African
American Cooking and Caribbean Cooking in one place called Terra Café located at 25th St and St. Paul. Admittedly, I didn’t expect much. The location is not downtown or on a trendy strip but it is close enough for the students of Johns Hopkins, the University of Baltimore and my alma mater, Morgan State University, to grab a bite.
The décor is a bright tropical green. The menu posted at the counter where one orders took me aback as I looked at some of my favorite foods including mac & cheese, collards, curried chicken and jerk chicken all on the same menu. My dining companion brought me to this location and she had her mind set on the baked fish. I went back and forth on what to order. The server suggests anything fish on the menu is popular. I watch some officers pick up an order of jerk chicken with a peppery scent that permeates the air.
Finally, I decide on the curry chicken. We take our orders to go. For a perfect girl’s night, we take our order to eat at my friend's home. We compliment our dinner with white wine as our choices are fish and chicken. However, White Zinfandel is more of a perfect match with curries.
The curry chicken is more uniquely prepared than I have had before. It seems to be roasted then cooked in a curry sauce. This process allows the chicken to stay in tact. The dinner is complimented with two sides. I elect the rice and a side of yams. The dinner automatically comes with cabbage and carrots. This is a memorable meal.
